After a successful 2010 tour of the Oregon Coast, performing to full houses in Newport, Pacific City and Manzanita, Cappella Romana returns with an entirely new program titled “Mt. Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium.”

Cappella Romana performs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Tillamook United Methodist Church.
This program presents exquisite musical treasures – from the cathedrals and monasteries of Byzantium – that were preserved from destruction in the Egyptian desert.

Many people are familiar with Gregorian Chant but there is a much older form of singing praises and hymns to God from the Orthodox tradition known as Byzantine Chant, dating as far back as the 5th century AD. This is the genre for which Cappella Romana is the recognized as “The world’s preeminent early-music vocal group,” (Portland Monthly Magazine).

Dr. Alexander Lingas is the artistic director of Cappella Romana. He founded the ensemble in 1991. He is a fellow at the University of Oxford’s European Humanities Research Center and a senior lecturer at the University of London’s Center for Music Studies.

Cappella Romana tours extensively and made its European début at the 2004 Byzantine Festival in London with concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia.

Cappella Romana’s performances have included concerts for such academic institutions as Princeton, Yale, and the Pontificio Istituto Prientale (Rome), in addition to music festivals in Canada, Ireland, Italy, the United Kingdom and the USA.
