Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarch Worried by Political Turmoil

August 2013

Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarch Neofit has described the current situation in Bulgaria as worrying, assuring he prays for God’s mercy.

“The situation in Bulgaria is disturbing”, Neofit told reporters, commenting the 50 days of ongoing anti-government protests in Bulgaria.
The exact measures needed for overcoming the current obstacles and for managing the situation in the country are hard to be pointed out, he said.
“We are still aiming to do the things that relieve people, that make them glad and that fill them up with the hope for prosperity and success in life.”
Prayers for the luck of the Bulgarian people are made during each service, assures Patriarch Neofit.
The series of mass anti-government rallies started on 14 June in response to the election of controversial media tycoon Delyan Peevski as a head of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

Although the appointment was cancelled, the move did not appease public discontent and the people went on to demand the resignation of the socialist-led government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski over ties with oligarchs.
