Blessing of the Foundation of the New Davidian Girls School Building in Calcutta

On October 6, in Kolkata, India, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians; offered a Blessing of the Foundation service for a new building being constructed on the campus of the Davidian Girls School.

The ceremony was attended by RA Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to India Mr. Ara Hakobian; Rev. Fr. Zaven Yazichyan, Armenian spiritual pastor of India and Manager of the Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy of Kolkata; Warden Susan Reuben and Warden Sunil Sobti, board members of the Armenian Church Committee of the Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth of Calcutta; Rev. Fr. Paruyr Avetisyan; Director of the Intra-Church Relations Office of the Mother See and numerous guests.

At the end of the blessing service, the Catholicos of All Armenians planted a commemorative tree. A banquet was held in honor of this momentous occasion.

The new building, which construction will start soon, will provide the best modern conditions for Armenian students who will study there. The work is scheduled to be completed in the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Davidian Girls School was established in 1922, by the benefactor David Avetis Davidian of India, who established the school to ensure a good education for Armenian children living in India. In 1953, the school became affiliated with the Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy of Kolkata, while retaining its autonomy.
