It has been reported that ten monks from various Orthodox monasteries of Eritrea has escaped to Ethiopia. The monks were targeted by Eritrean Security agents in relation with the recent letter of excommunication published by the Union of Eritrean Orthodox monasteries. The Letter excommunicated the government agents Mr Yiftahaye Dimetros and Mr Habtom Russom who were trying to control the Church in Eritrea.
Government accused the monks; blaming them to be the major force behind the excommunication letter and began searching for them. As the information leaked, the monks decided to escape. The escaped monks are from the monasteries of Abune Siefe Michael, Abune Libanos, Abune Abranious, Abune Buruk, and Abune Yonas.
During 2005/06 many monks, priests and deacons were throw into prison for their opposition towards the illegal intervention of government in the internal affairs of the Eritrean Orthodox church.
Eritrean monasteries are diminishing in large numbers for the past few decades particular due to the interventions of colonial powers in the past and government authorities at present. Large number of monasteries and churches in country has been shut down due to lack of inhabitants and proper care. The youngsters who wish to take up monastic life are forced to join endless military service.
