Almost 50,000 Ukrainian Refugees Sheltered in Russian Temporary Accommodation
RIA Novosti – 11/8/14
The number of refugees from southeastern parts of Ukraine currently living in temporary accommodation facilities in Russia is about to reach 50,000.
MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) – The number of refugees from southeastern parts of Ukraine currently living in temporary accommodation facilities in Russia is about to reach 50,000, an emergency response center representative told RIA Novosti on Friday.
“As of Friday morning, 662 temporary settlements accommodate 48,830 Ukrainian refugees. A day before there were 47,540 [refugees],” the representative said, adding that almost 29,000 refugees have already been brought to other Russian regions.
Temporary settlements are usually located in educational and sports facilities, health care centers, holiday centers and children’s summer camps, with the number of beds numbering from 50 to several thousand.
The influx of Ukrainian refugees to Russia has increased dramatically since June due to the ongoing armed conflict between the Donbas independence supporters and Ukrainian forces.
As Russian authorities and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Vincent Cochetel reported earlier this week, some 730,000 Ukrainians have fled Ukraine for Russia since the beginning of the year.
