India: The 29th of July 2014 marks the 125th anniversary of the consecration of Alvares Julius as the Metropolitan of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church by St Gregorious of Parumala (the first canonized Indian Saint). Metropolitan Alvares Julius was a legendary personality who reunited with the Indian Orthodox Church from the Roman Catholic Church. He was given the title – THE ARCHBISHOP & EPISCOPAL PREFECT OF CEYLON,GOA & INDIA (EXCLUDING MALABAR).
He was a great Orthodox Missionary champion and was also know as the Apostle of the poor and down trodden. He toiled all his life to spread the Orthodox faith and created countless missionary congregations, churches, institutions and faithful. He was the first Prelate to bring Orthodox faith to Sri Lanka.
