Lukashenko doesn’t rule out meeting of Patriarch Kirill with Benedict XVI in Byelorussia
Minsk, November 30, Interfax – If the primates of the Russian Church and the Roman Catholic Church meet in Byelorussia, it would be a present to Byelorussian people, the country’s President Alexander Lukashenko said in his interview to the La Stampa Italian paper.
“If there a meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia is possible, this question is in sphere of the high spiritual hierarchs of the Church, it depends on them. I am sure this meeting will be useful to the whole Christian world,” Lukashenko stressed.
“If there’s some progress, we will become witnesses to such a meeting. If the leaders of two Christian confessions agree over such a meeting and possibility of conducting it in Byelorussia, it will be a present to Byelorussian people,” he added.
When asked to make a forecast as to prospects of such meeting in the nearest future basing on the results of his meetings with the Pope of Rome and Patriarch Kirill, Lukashenko said optimism had always been his characteristic feature. “I don’t rule anything out,” the Byelorussian leader said.
