KUWAIT: Sheikha Fraiha Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah is taking legal action against an Islamist lawmaker she accuses of verbal offense over statements in which he criticized building a new church for the Armenian Orthodox community in Kuwait. “Legal action will be taken against MP Waleed Al-Tabtabaei for his blatant and offensive attack against Sheikha Fraiha Al-Sabah, through which he undervalues her restless efforts in serving her country”, said attorney Ali Al-Ali on Tuesday.
Al-Tabtabaei was quick to respond, and challenged the lawyer to find any insults in his statements. “I never made any offensive remark against Sheikha Fraiha… my statements were picked up by many news websites where you can find them for verification”, he said.
Sheikha Fraiha Al-Sabah made promises during a visit to the Prelacy of the Armenian Orthodox last week to support efforts for licensing an Armenian Apostolic Church in Kuwait. On Monday, Al-Tabtabaei argued that licensing worship places is under regulation by Kuwait Municipality and the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.
He urged the Amiri Diwan to “take appropriate measures against initiatives, falling outside proper legal procedures, taken by members of the honorable ruling family”.
