2014 FOCUS North America Internship Program

Since 2009, FOCUS North America has offered an internship program to undergraduates and recent college graduates interested non-profit management and poverty reduction programs. The FOCUS Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to the operations of a cutting edge organization that provides healthcare, housing, job/workforce development, and other community development activities to the homeless and working poor families in North America.

FOCUS North America Internship Program in 2014

FOCUS internships typically require a 10 to 12 week full-time commitment during the months of June – August. In 2014 there will be multiple opportunities for interns as follows:

National Program Intern at our Pittsburgh headquarters with some travel to FOCUS operations nationwide;

Research & Planning Intern at our Pittsburgh headquarters. This position will work primarily with the Youth Equipped to Serve (YES) Program field office with some travel to home build sites in New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Toms River, NJ and Colorado;

Center Interns based in cities across the nation and supporting various FOCUS program centers.

All interns will receive stipends. All interns are responsible for their own housing.

A detailed action plan for each intern will be developed based on the descriptions below.

Eligibility Requirements

Undergraduate, recent college graduates, or advanced degree students. Must be 18 years of age or older.

Internship Descriptions

National Program Intern

FOCUS North America is a national, faith-based non-profit organization that provides sustainable services to the homeless and working poor of America. Through targeted feeding, job-creation, housing, and community distribution programs, FOCUS seeks to transform people’s lives, moving them from dependency to self-sufficiency.

Summary

The Program Intern will work with the national office to compile and document FOCUS’ program models and work on researching and establishing new FOCUS programs around the nation. This internship will provide practical, hands-on training and experience in the day to day operations of the FOCUS North America National Office and requires a high-performance and driven individual. Travel (expenses paid by FOCUS) throughout the United States may be required to observe and research FOCUS’ operations.

Responsibilities

Research existing program models and policies.

Create short briefing papers on FOCUS programs and best practices

Coordinate with FOCUS staff and volunteers nationwide to assess and monitor existing programming and plan for new initiatives.

Develop a locally-hosted database of FOCUS program models.

Assist in planning staff and partner meetings.

Perform other duties as required.

Research and Planning Intern

Summary

The Research and Planning Assistant will manage national projects and assist the YES Program Director with regular program activities, along with overseeing YES Trip planning and other research projects of the national office.
