Catholicos Karekin II Welcomes New Latvian Ambassador, Discusses Regional Concerns

Yerevan-Armenia: H.H Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received the newly appointed Latvian Ambassador to Armenia, Edith Medne, at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin on February 13,2024. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing ongoing security concerns in the region.

The Catholicos extended his warm wishes to Ambassador Medne, expressing hope for a successful tenure. He highlighted the long-standing friendly ties between Armenia and Latvia, referencing the support offered by Latvians during the early days of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. His Holiness commended the Latvian authorities for their care towards the Armenian community within the country. He acknowledged their active participation in Latvian public life and their role in bridging relations between the two nations.

The Catholicos expressed concern about the ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan, highlighting security threats, displaced Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, and the preservation of the region’s cultural heritage. He emphasized the hope for international support and the efforts of friendly nations like Latvia to help uphold Armenian rights.

Ambassador Medne reaffirmed the existing positive relations and pledged to work towards their expansion. She underscored the importance of peaceful dialogue and non-violent solutions to achieve regional stability. Additionally, she stressed the need for full integration of displaced Armenians into Armenian society.
