Visit of the UOC Primate to Armenia Completed

On October 29-30 the UOC Primate was on his visit to Armenia.

On October 30 His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr laid flowers to the memorial for the victims of earthquake in 1988 in Spitakl, following which he said a greeting word to the local residents in the square named after Victor Yanukovych. 

Also His Beatitude Volodymyr called to the local church “Surb Artyun”. He also prayed for the repose of souls of the deceased during the earthquake.  During his visit the Primate of the UOC also met with the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church Garegin II.   As a keepsake of meeting His Beatitude Volodymyr presented a panagia and a copy of facsimile edition the Peresopnytsia Gospels to Catholicos of All Armenians.  

His Beatitude was accompanied by counsel for the President of Ukraine Mykola Demyanko, Secretary for the UOC Primate Bishop Alexander of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy andteacher of the Kyiv Theological Seminary Oleg Sknar. 

Background. In 1988 the natural disaster destroyed  Spitak city, situated in the Northern part of Armenia. 58 were totally destroyed as well.  According to official data, as a result of the earthquake 25 thousand people died, 140 thousand became physically disabled and 500 were rendered homeless. 
An active part in rescue and repair work in Armenia was taken by a local production enterprise, which at that time was headed by the acting president of Ukraine. Spitak residents named one of the squares in honor of Victor Yanukovych  as a token of gratitude for help.
