Unearthed Recording of Fr Alexander Schmemann
SVOTS – 27/1/21
This year, 2021, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann (+1983), former dean and professor at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, renowned theologian, and prolific writer and speaker.
As we begin our year of honoring his life and profound contributions to the Church, we are so pleased to share his voice with you. His words, captured decades ago—on a recording which recently came into our possession—are anything but dated. They are further proof that Fr. Alexander remains “A Voice for Our Time.” (Click the video above to watch.)
We hope this recording inspires you, strengthens you, and points you toward God (as Fr. Alexander was so good at doing). I had never heard a recording of Fr. Alexander of such good quality before now. That made his timeless words all the more moving for me, as someone who never heard him in person.
Our year of celebrating Fr. Alexander continues this Saturday with The 38th Annual Father Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture. The online event coincides with the release of the upcoming book, A Voice for Our Time: Radio Liberty Talks, Vol. 1, featuring an English translation of Schmemann’s broadcasts into the Soviet Union. New York Times bestselling author Rod Dreher, who wrote the foreword for the book, will deliver this year’s lecture.
Registration ends at 8 p.m. EST on January 28.
