Turkish Minister: Armenian Church of Holy Cross to have cross atop the dome by September 19
Eventually, Turkish authorities have allowed to place a cross atop the dome of the Armenian Church of Holy Cross in Akhtamar Island, Hurriyet reported. Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay said the decision on placing the cross was taken at the institution of cultural monuments and nature conservation in Van. Thus, for the first time in the republican Turkey’s history a cross has been allowed to be placed atop the dome of an Armenian church.
Primate of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople Aram Ateshyan stated that he has not received any official note about permission, however highlighted that the placement of the cross will grant utmost pleasure to the Armenians. Turkish Culture Minister explained that state bodies have not managed to inform the public about the issue since the decision has been just taken. The Minister assured that by the holy mass which is due in the church September 19, the cross will have been placed.
