Turkish Court Releases Would-be Assassin of Patriarch Bartholomew

26/12/2010

The would-be assassin of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Ismet Recber, was discharged from prison. After the first hearing Wednesday, Ismet Recber was released pending the outcome of the trial, as he denies all charges.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Recber, a carpenter, was arrested after an anonymous letter claimed that a suspect in another trial had tapped him to do the killing. This was part of an alleged larger plot to topple the Islam-rooted government. His trial has been postponed until May 2011.
