Turkey’s EU negotiator visits Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul

Turkey’s chief EU negotiator celebrated Easter of all Orthodox Christians in Turkey as he visited Greek Orthodox church.

Head of European Union-hopeful Turkey’s accession talks on Thursday paid a visit to Agia Efimia Greek Orthodox Church at Istanbul’s Kadikoy district, meeting with George Stefanapoulos, head of the church foundation.

Bagis celebrated Easter of all Orthodox Christians in Turkey, saying the country “has now a climate where everyone respected each other’s values.”

Responding to a question over possible reopening of the Halki Seminary, Bagis said the government was mulling the issue however added, “there are certain steps that Turkey and Greece needs to take simultaneously.”

Bagis said Turkey’s housed nearly 2,800 Turkish-Greek citizens, adding that the government exerted sincere efforts to find a solution in educating clergymen to lead the country’s Greek Orthodox congregation.
