The Patriarch of Romania Celebrated the Canon Service of Saint Andrew the Cretan at the Patriarchal Cathedral
March 2014
Monday, 3 March 2014, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church celebrated the Canon of Saint Andrew the Cretan at the Patriarchal Cathedral after the Vesper service. The canon service began at 16.00 hours, in the presence of hundreds of faithful. Because we are during the Lent period, the Primate of our Church is wearing black cassock and only white kamelaykion, the well known insignia of the patriarchal dignity.
Have mercy God, have mercy
To end with the Great Canon service, the Patriarch of Romania delivered a sermon for those present. His Beatitude emphasised the value of repentance and of the rapprochement to God underlined through the prayer “Have mercy, God, have mercy!”, present in the 250 lines of the Canon.
“When saying “Have mercy, God, have mercy!” we admit that we cannot do anything for our salvation alone, that our entire salvation, namely getting eternal life depends, first of all, on the mercy of God. When man starts realising that he is a Christian only as long as he lives in relationship or in communion with Christ, he can defeat the temptation coming into his mind, words or deeds. This prayer is based on our faith that no matter how big our sins may be, they cannot exceed God’s unlimited mercy, His love for humans”, His Beatitude said according to Trinitas radio station.
We give what we have, namely fasting, to get what we do not have, namely not suffering
The Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church wished all the faithful to feel the spiritual benefits of the fast during this period: “Let us pray to Jesus Christ, our Lord, and to His saints to help us with their prayers and give us the power to feel in our souls the fruits of the repentance during the Lent, namely the deification of life, as Saint John Chrysostom says: “We give what we have, namely fasting, to get what we do not have, namely not suffering”.
The liturgical answers were given by Nicolae Lungu chorus of the Romanian Patriarchate, as well as by Tronos psalmic group of the Patriarchal Cathedral.
