Syrian Christians for Assad

Metropolitan Ishak, who is an aide of the head of the Syrian Christian Church Patriarch John X, has given an interview to the Voice of Russia.

His Eminence Ishak says that Syrian Christians recognize the regime of the current President Bashar al-Assad as Syria’s legitimate authority and support it.

Syrian Christians are concerned that if the opposition comes to power, it may start persecution against Christians up to their total elimination.

“Let me remind you that persecution against Christians became frequent in Iraq after Saddam Hussein was ousted,” the metropolitan added.

“Declarations of the Syrian opposition that it allegedly wants to overthrow the tyrant and to establish democracy in the country are no more than slogans,” Metropolitan Ishak is convinced. “If the Syrian opposition comes to power, it will very likely persecute religious minorities much more severely than the Assad regime does.”

“Similar slogans were proclaimed by Egyptian and Tunisian “revolutionaries”, His Eminence said. “But when they came to power, they started Islamization of all institutions in their countries and persecution of those who do not support their ideology.”
