Syriac Orthodox Monastery in Turkey suffers attacks

14/8/13

Members of the staff of a Syrian Orthodox monastery were attacked on August 11 in Midyat, a city of 60,000 in southeastern Turkey, the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA) reported.

When a group of young Kurdish Muslims came to the monastery as visiting hours were ending, they demanded entrance and said, “We are PKK [the Kurdistan Workers’ Party] and we own this land; obey us, or you will be sorry,” according to a witness. After a fight ensued, police used pepper spray on the monastery staff, AINA reported.

“The monastery was attacked two months before this incident by young Kurds from the town of Batman,” a witness told the agency. “We gave the police the footage from the surveillance camera from the previous attack, and now it’s gone and no one was punished.”
