Superior of the Holy Trinity St Jonah Monastery of Kyiv became Bishop of Obukhiv

On September 10, the commemoration of the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kyiv-Caves resting in the Far Caves, Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Refectory Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
Concelebrating to him was His Eminence Metropolitan Onuphrius of Chernivtsy and Bukovina, the archbishops: His Eminence Metrophanes of Bila Tserkva and Bohuslav, His Eminence Alxander of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy and Vishneve (Secretary for the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church), the Bishops: His Grace Agapit of Severodontsk and Starobilsk, His Grace Iriney of Nizhyn and Pryluky, His Grace Ilariy of Makariv, His Grace Serafim of Yahotyn, His Grace Anthony of Alexandria and Svitlovodsk, His Grace Panteleimon of Vasylkiv, Hus Grace Filaret of Drohobych.
During the worship the synaxis of bishops ordained to episcopacy the Superior of the Holy Trinity St Jonah Monastery of Kyiv and the chairman of the Synodal Youth Department Archimandrite Jonah (Cherepanov). According to the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, presided over by His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine on August 26, 2011, the ordained Bishop will bear the title “of Obukhiv” (Journal 62).
After the celebration His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr addressed the bishop ordained with a word of instruction and handed him the bishop’s crosier, and then Bishop Jonah blessed the believers.
The day before in the evening, at the conference hall of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at the Primate’s residence at the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Archimandrite Jonah (Cherepanov) was nominated the Bishop of Obukhiv.

Bishop Jonah was born in 1971 in the city of Kyiv. He received the theological education at the Kyiv Theological schools. He also studied at the Kyiv Medical Institute named after A.Bogomolets. In 1992he enlisted to the brethren of the Kyiv Caves Monastery, and in 1993 he was transferred to St Jonah monastery. In 1995 he was tonsured a monk and named in honor of the Venerable Jonah, the founder of the monastery. In the same year he was ordained hierodeacon, and later hieromonk. In 1999 he was appointed Father Superior of the Holy Trinity St Jonah Monastery. In 2010 he was appointed chairman of the Synodal Youth Department.
