Statues of Emperor Haile Selassie and Ras Makonnen Destroyed

Global: A statue of former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie has been destroyed in the Wimbledon Park in south-west London. The statue was destroyed by a group of more than 100 people.

The incident has been linked to the recent unrest in Ethiopia as a result of the murder of the popular Oromian singer Hachalu Hundessa. Moreover, the statue of Ras Makonnen (Selassie’s father) was destroyed in Harrar.

Oromo the largest ethnic group has been protesting since 2016. They have been complaining of being sidelined. In 2019, motivated by fanatic leaders like Jawar Mohammed and others, radical Oromo groups attacked and killed a large number of Non -Oromo (especially Orthodox Christians) and have destroyed more than 30 Orthodox Churches and institutions.
