St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary to Appear on the Economic Report
St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that the producers of *The Economic Report *will feature the seminary in an upcoming segment on topics, trends, and issues related to “*Leading Developments in Faith Based Higher Education”* as part of the show’s *Focus on Emerging Issues* series.
For many people, selecting the proper graduate school is about more than examining programs and looking at residence halls. A large number of students today are seeking institutions that enrich them spiritually.
St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (SVOTS) is a graduate professional school that seeks to serve the Orthodox Church and the world through theological education and scholarship. Established in 1938, the seminary prepares students for ministry as bishops, priests, deacons, lay leaders and scholars so that they may build up Orthodox communities, foster Church growth through mission and evangelism, teach the Orthodox faith, and care for those in need. Non-orthodox students also come to SVOTS to study in the areas of early church history and ancient Christian writers, in preparation for future doctoral studies or ecumenical work.
“Theology and education for ministry are not simply academic pursuits,” says Very Rev. Dr. John Behr, Dean of SVOTS. “An Orthodox theological education is far more encompassing and demanding than that offered in a typical institution of higher learning. Members of the seminary community – faculty, staff, and students alike – are challenged to respect and value each member of our richly diverse community as a unique human person created in the image and likeness of God.”
Located in the Crestwood neighborhood of Yonkers, New York, St. Vladimir’s offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Arts (MA), and Master of Theology (ThM). Beyond its theological education, the seminary is also a center for theological research and reflection. Recently St. Vladimir’s established a green initiative to provide an Orthodox response to the growing ecological crisis of our day.
“Orthodox Christianity ecologically involves the relationship with both the inhabited earth, the human community, and the natural eco-system in which we live,” says the Very Rev. Dr. Chad Hatfield, Chancellor of SVOTS. “We are implementing sustainable practices across our twelve-acre campus, exploring alternative energy sources, and caring for God’s creation.”
The five-minute segment will inform viewers on the interrelated components of a theological education, highlighting St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary as an exemplary Orthodox Christian institution.
