Son of Orthodox priest beaten in Croatia

ZAGREB — A son of an Orthodox priest was beaten up in the Croatian village of Borovo after a protest against the use of Cyrillic alphabet on Saturday.

One of the buses carrying protesters from the protest held in the town of Vukovar stopped on its way back at a restaurant in Borovo, the village with predominantly Serb population.

A physical fight then broke out between three persons, TV Nova has reported.

The beaten man is a son of an Orthodox priest from Borovo.

“As far as I know, he did not suffer serious injuries but the police sent him to hospital. I still have not spoken to my son but I know there are many witnesses and that two, three buses from Beli Manastir were there,” the priest said.

The Croatian police confirmed that the 21-year old of Borovo was injured and added that the investigation was underway.

According to reports, the perpetrators stoned the restaurant after they beat up the priest’s son.

Around 20,000 protesters gathered at the rally against the announced introduction of the Cyrillic script in Vukovar on Saturday.
