Sofia mayor bans concerts, rallies in Alexander Nevski Square
11/6/2010
Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandukova has banned all forms of rallies, demonstrations and concerts in Alexander Nevski Square with immediate effect on June 10, according to Bulgarian media.
The decision was taken after the latest concert staged in the square, which allegedly upset local residents. The event had continued past 10pm, violating the state decree for public order, according to Fandukova.
In the future, Sofia municipality will refuse permission for such events to be staged around the Alexander Nevski cathedral, because they were “immoral”, “inappropriate” and “inconvenient” for residents.
Political rallies and protests have also been banned. Only state events, national celebrations and church celebrations can now be staged outside Bulgaria’s largest orthodox cathedral.
Over the past 20 years it has become something of a tradition to organise and state political protests, rallies and concerts around the cathedral. According to the mayor, however, such events can be held at the Alexander I Square or in front of the National Palace of Culture NDK from now on.
