Russians mark the Day of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

Today the Russian Orthodox Church is celebrating he Day of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, – one of the most revered Christian Saints, who is believed to be the Patron Saint of sailors and travellers, the protector of widows and orphaned children.
A great many churches in Russia have been named after St. Nicholas, while in Europe the Saint is seen as the prototype of Santa Claus. St. Nicholas was born into a devout Christian family in Patara of Lycia, in Asia Minor, in the middle of the third century A.D. He was known for his virtues and Christian devotion since early childhood.
