Russian Orthodox fight Sign

WOOLLONGABBA: Parishioners of Australia’s oldest Russian Orthodox cathedral in Woolloongabba are fighting to remove a seven-metre-high billboard, blocking the view of the heritage site.

Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas submitted a petition to remove the billboard at 324 Vulture St to the Brisbane City Council during the summer recess.

However, the council this month denied the petition, as local laws meant the licence for the sign, approved in 2007, would be automatically renewed annually until 2017.

Parishioner Con Drozdovskii said the billboard obscured the view of the church from the road and had previously displayed inappropriate advertising content, which offended the congregation.
Councillor Helen Abrahams (Gabba ward) did not agree with the council’s decision and said the sign was too large for the site.

“The community… believes no regard was given to the heritage significance of their cathedral when the approval was issued.’‘

However, Families and Community Services chairwoman Geraldine Knapp said the council could not remove the sign due to local laws.

“Cr Abrahams and her Labor colleagues not only approved this billboard but also designed the law that stops council from being able to remove it,’’ she said.

Joint managing director of Goa Billboards Chris Tyquin said Goa voluntarily agreed to keep contentious copy off the sign.
