Russian Orthodox church to be built in Madrid

Madrid, July 12, Interfax – The Madrid administration has allotted a plot of land in a prestigious area in the north of the Spanish capital for the local Russian Orthodox parish to build a church, the parish rector Archpriest Andrey Kordochkin told Interfax-Religion.

A board of trustees formed for the construction project includes Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, a claimant to the headship of the Romanovs Imperial House of Russia, Russian Ambassador to Spain Alexander Kuznetsov, Russian Orthodox clerics, and Russian and Spanish architects.

Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, at a ceremony in March 2009 in which he awarded a symbolic Golden Key to Madrid to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, announced a decision to allot land for building a Russian church in response to a request from the Russian Embassy.

The Russian Parish of the Nativity of Christ was set up in 2003.

The plot is 756 square meters in area.
