Russian Orthodox Church marks Nativity of St. John the Baptist

7/7/2010

The Russian Orthodox Church marks the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, a great prophet known for challenging sinful rulers, calling for repentance and promising God’s justice.

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia will make a divine service on this occasion in one of the Moscow churches.

It is interesting that it was thanks to this holiday that the modern musical notation was invented born in early 11 century, when Italian monk Guido of Arezzo was teaching children to sing anthems glorifying St. John the Baptist.
