Russian Church urges people to light candles in their windows to honour the memory of the fallen in the World War II late in the night of June 21

Moscow, June 17, Interfax – The Moscow Patriarchate called all compatriots and those who honour the fallen soldiers of the World War II to take part in the memorial event “Memory Candle” dedicated to the killed soldiers of war.

“The most important is that any person can join this event. I urge everyone to light a candle on a window sill late in the night of June 21 or early in the morning of June 22 to remember those who were killed on the battlefields and died of war hardships,” head of the Synodal Church and Society Department Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said at a press conference in the Interfax head office.

According to him, “it is important today” to pray about these people and express our gratitude to them, “and the best way to do it is to lit a candle which is a symbol close to the hearts of all Russians.”

As part of this “Memory Candle” event, young people, members of religious organizations, patriotic unions and veterans will lit their candles at Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow on June 21 at 11:00 p.m., and honour the memory of the fallen with a minute of silence. Presumably, everybody can take part in this action worldwide by lighting candles on June 21 in their homes.

This year, the “Memory Candle” event will be held in the cities of Russia, Byelorussia and Ukraine. The organizers also encourage the participation of youth organizations from the Near Baltic countries.
