Russian and Georgian Churches to develop their relations in spite of all Political Conflicts
Moscow, July 2, Interfax – Hierarchs of the Russian and Georgian Orthodox Churches promised to strengthen relations between their peoples in spite of all conflicts in interstate relations.
“Russians and Georgians are two fraternal nations, bonds existing between them are so close and deep that no political events can ever destroy them,” Head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Archbishop Hilarion of Volokolamsk told journalist on Wednesday evening commenting on the results of Patriarch Kirill’s meeting with delegation of the Georgian Patriarchate.
The Archbishop stressed “political conjuncture cannot change” many-centuries relations between the two Churches.
“Political events have influence today, they may have influence few more years, while relations between the Georgian and the Russian Orthodox Churches have been built for a thousand years,” he said.
According to the Moscow Patriarchate official, interchurch relation becomes especially important “when bonds are torn or weakened at the political level.”
