Protesters attack Greek pride event, hurling eggs, plastic bottles
24/6/2012
ATHENS — Dozens of protesters on Saturday interrupted a Pride event in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, hurling eggs and plastic bottles of water at event participants.
Police said about 50 attackers targeted the Pride parade, attended by approximately 400 people, according to the Greek Reporter, although organizers said attendance was closer to 2,000.
In recent days, Anthimos, the senior Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, had publicly criticized the planned gay pride parade. Anthimos, who only uses one name, is known for his outspoken speeches on social and political issues.
There was no immediate indication whether the protesters were Anthimos supporters, and police said no injuries were reported.
