Prince of Wales visits Dormition Cathedral of Sourozh diocese
DECR – 19/12/16
On 13 December 2016, His Royal Highness Prince Charles paid an unofficial visit to the London Dormition Cathedral of the Sourozh diocese.
After the Divine liturgy Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh consecrated the belfry after the renovations. The bells were consecrated by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill during his visit to Great Britain.
A special moleben service led by the eldest cleric of the Sourozh diocese, Archpriest Benedict Ramsden, was celebrated for the health of the royal family.
Archbishop Elisey addressed Prince Charles, noting the relationship between the Russian Church and the British monarchy and expressing deep thanks for coming to visit the cathedral.
Prince Charles went round the cathedral consecrated after the renovation by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and prayed at the relics of St. Elizabeth.
Festive concert was performed by the bishop’s choir and the children’s choir of the cathedral.
In commemoration of Prince Charles’ visit Archbishop Elisey presented him with a Kazan icon of the Mother of God and a photo of the bell with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II cast for the celebration of her 90th birth and the 300th anniversary of Russian Orthodoxy in Great Britain. Prince Charles met with members of the congregation, children of the parish school and clerics of the Sourozh diocese.
I doubt if His Royal Highness was told of what happened in that Cathedral ten years ago, when the British adherents were forced out by Metropolitan (now Patriarch) Kirill, along with the Cathedral’s Bishop and clergy. It has left a legacy of continuing bitterness and anger within the wider Christian community in England at the unchristian and shameful behaviour of Kirill as well as of his associate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokalamsk. The Church of England thinks very badly of them.
