Pope urges high turnout for Egypt parl’t polls

11/11/2011

CAIRO – The head of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Shenuda III urged the nation’s Christians to turn out in force for the forthcoming parliamentary elections and practise their political rights.

Pope Shenuda called on the Copts to ensure a high turnout in the polls for the lower house of the Egyptian Parliament on November 28.

“The Coptic voters are urged to go to the ballot boxes in the forth coming parliamentary elections later this month,” Shenuda told the faithful during his weekly sermon held in Cairo every Wednesday night.

However, the Pope refrained from endorsing any members competing for seats in the People’s Assembly. But the called on people to vote for candidates, who will serve their interests.

“People should vote for those who will serve Egypt and the Egyptians,” he said.
