Pope Shenouda III vows to release Coptic Detainees

02/12/2010

Head of the Egyptian Coptic Church, Pope Shenouda III, said he is closely following developments in the wake of recent Coptic riots in Omraniya, Giza.

Hundreds of Copts last week took to the streets to protest the halted construction of a local church. Clashes with security ensued, leading to several deaths and scores of injuries.

“I will interfere to get the detainees released,” said Shenouda. He denied entrusting the case to a close businessman or bishop, while pledging the church will not withdraw from the case. He also denied designating lawyers, advisers, or spokespeople to speak on his behalf.

Shenouda said the bishop of Giza met with the governor and other security officials to discuss the protests and clashes. The bishop did not apologize for the Coptic role in the incidents, Shenouda emphasized.

Shenouda asserted confidence in the Egyptian justice system and prosecution officials. He said he hoped for a speedy end to the crisis.

The pope did not mention the last Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Electoral authorities on Wednesday announced a sweeping victory for the ruling National Democratic Party.
