Patriarch Kirill mourns over Indonesia Tragedy

Moscow, October 6, Interfax – Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has expressed condolences over the huge loss of life and destruction in an earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia.

“May God send recovery to all victims and strengthen those who are working to deal with the aftermath of this natural disaster,” the Patriarch said in a telegram to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, published by the Patriarch’s press service.

The death toll from the earthquake in Sumatra could reach 3,000, Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said. Thousands of people were injured or lost their homes.

One thousand one hundred Indonesians were killed in the earthquake, according to the UN. About 20,000 buildings were destroyed in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra.
