Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II Visited Several Regions of Kurdistan : Celebrates Divine Liturgy at the Mother of Light Church in Ankawa

On August 23, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II visited St. Sergius and Bacchus Church in Akra along with the villages of Ashawa, Sarsank, Araden and Duhok in the region of Kurdistan. His Holiness was accompanied by their Eminences Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf-Archbishop of Mosul and Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak – Director of the Patriarchal Office.
His Holiness thanked all those who are helping in the rehabilitation of the displaced people with shelter and assistance. He then listened to the worries and complaints of the refugees.
His Holiness spoke with great sorrow on the tragic situation of Christians. He assured them, that he will do his level best to get them back to their lands. He emphasized that he is in contact with all governments and churches – east and west – to provide them with the humanitarian help and assistance. He also stressed the importance of international protection the ability to develop self-defense for the future.
On August 24, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated Holy Qurobo (Divine Liturgy) at the Mother of Light Church in Ankawa.
His Holiness was assisted by their Eminences Mor Timotheos Moussa Al-Shamani, Archbishop of the Diocese and Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak- Patriarchal Office Director. The Holy Qurobo was also attended by Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul and Environs along with many priests, monks and deacons.Many young children attended the Holy Qurobo and received communion.
His Eminence Archbishop Daoud welcomed His Holiness and the accompanying delegation. He emphasized the role of spiritual celebrations in affirming the words of our Lord, Jesus Christ so that the gates of Hades will not overpower the Church.
In his sermon, His Holiness addressed the young children and discussed the meanings and depth of the Sacrament of Eucharist. He then explained to them the greatness of the Liturgical sacrament through which the faithful receive the body and blood of Christ. He then gave his fatherly advice and concluded the Liturgical services with a prayer for the end of crisis in Iraq and for the return of all displaced people to their homeland.
