Orthodox head to attend 40th year celebrations

MUSCAT :The Indian  Malankara Orthodox Church, which is celebrating its 1960th anniversary and centenary of the Catholicate establishment in India this year, has planned several humanitarian and charity projects in India, Bishop Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan said on Thursday.

The Catholicos, who is on a visit to Muscat to participate in the 40th year Valedictory function of Mar Gregorios Orthodox Maha Edavaka, Muscat and the Catholicate Centenary celebrations, said the projects include assistance for medical treatment of poor families, contributing to the treatment of cancer patients and welfare of the elderly living alone. Bishop Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Metropolitan of Ahmedabad Diocese elaborated on the activities undertaken by the diocese.

Joji George, Vicar of the Mar Gregorios Orthodox Maha Edavaka Muscat said the church in Muscat, which has over 5,000 members, has plannned to contribute to the treatment of poor cancer patients in India.

The two-day 40th year valedictory function and Catholicate centenary celebrations will conclude on Friday. Bishop Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II will be the chief celebrant at the service. A number of events including a musical programme have been lined up as part of the celebrations, he said.
