Malankara-Kerala-India: Two Orthodox Christian Prelates, Metropolitan Geevarghese Coorilos of the Niranam of the Jacobite Syriac Church and Yuhanon Meletius of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church has refuted the ‘Jihadist Statement’ by Joseph Kallarangatt, the Syro-Malabar Uniate Roman Catholic Bishop. In a recent sermon, Bishop Kallarangatt accused the Muslim community in Kerala of “narcotics jihad”.
However, according to Metropolitan Coorilos of Niranam “in Kerala, no religious community is under any serious threat, let alone Christianity”. “The comment made by the Bishop of Pala is unauthentic and to me, unacceptable, stated Yuhanon Milithios of Thrissur. Interestingly Orthodox Bishops belong to two age-old waring Christian communities in Kerala (Malankara).
Apart from Bishops of Malankara and Jacobite Orthodox Churches, Theodosius Mar Thoma, the head and Metropolitan of the Marthoma Church, Bishop Malayil Sabu K Cherian of the Church of South India (CSI-Anglican) have also condemned the statement by the Palai Uniate Bishop. Above all, Fr Paul Thelakkatthe former spokesperson of the Syro-Malabar church commented that the statement by Kallarangat does not reflect the stand of the Christian community on the issue.
The statement has caused a lot of controversy and political discussions in the Indian State of Kerala
