Noted scholar and author conducts research in OCA Archives

SYOSSET, NY [OCA] — Dr. Roy R. Robson, professor at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, visited the Archives of the Orthodox Church in America here in mid-July 2010 to conduct research.

Dr. Robson, an Orthodox Christian, is author of a notable book on Solovki, the ancient Russian monastery that had been used as a prison camp during the darkest years of Soviet oppression against the Church. His current research is focused on Pimen Sofronov [1898-1973], the renowned Old Believer iconographer, whose remarkable work is found in a number of OCA churches, including Three Saints Church, Ansonia, CT; Saints Peter and Paul Church, Syracuse, NY; and Saint Vladimir Church, Trenton, NJ. Dr. Robson is interested in obtaining any information on Pimen Sofronov and his iconography that may be found in churches or in private collections. He may be contacted at r.robson@usp.edu. Professor Robson is one of many scholars and other historical researchers from around the world who regularly visit the OCA Archives to conduct research on a wide diversity of topics. In addition, many parishes have conducted research in the OCA Archives to uncover their early histories, especially in conjunction with preparation of historical publications for parish anniversaries.

The OCA Archives contains the official inactive records of the Central Church Administration, documenting the All-American Councils, the Holy Synod, the Metropolitan Council, dioceses, monasteries, seminaries, parishes, clergy, departments, boards, commissions, international and other matters. It also houses some 90 sets of personal and institutional archives of hierarchs, clergy, lay leaders, and Church-related entities, as well as photographs, films and videos, computer discs, and other media, periodicals, Church directories, and anniversary and historical publications and artifacts from throughout the world. These historical collections include original documents handwritten by the North American Orthodox saints and documentation chronicling the Church’s history from the arrival of Orthodox Christian missionaries in Alaska in 1794.
