Norfolk churches celebrate Orthodox Easter

Orthodox churches in Norwich and Kings Lynn are offering a warm invitation to come and celebrate Easter with them over the weekend of May 4-5.

The Romanian Orthodox Church in Norwich (pictured right) and the British Orthodox Church, theChurch of St Mary and St Felix in Babingley on the Sandringham Estate are offering an invitation to join them for their upcoming Easter Celebrations next weekend.

The Orthodox Christian date for Easter Sunday, also known as ‘Pascha’, is often later than the Easter date observed by many western churches due to adherence to the Julian rather than the Gregorian calendar.

Fr Liviu Barbu, priest-in-charge of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Norwich said: “We start our Easter vigil on Saturday May 4, at about 11.45 pm. At midnight, after we light the candles, we go out of the church, in order to read the Gospel that tells the world that Christ has risen from the dead. We are back in church after that continuing chanting special Easter hymns followed by the solemn Divine Liturgy. You may be with us for whatever length of time you may wish.”

The languages used in the service are English, Greek and Romanian.

Abba Seraphim of the British Orthodox Church said: We shall be celebrating it at St. Felix, Babingley, on Pascha Eve, Saturday May 4 with the Divine Liturgy at 7.00 p.m. We would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone who would like to join us in our celebration.”
