Moldovan parliament speaker meets Orthodox Church representatives

Chisinau, April 10. /MOLDPRES/. Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu today met the members of the Holy Synod of the Moldovan Orthodox Church, headed by Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova Vladimir, the parliament’s media relations department has said.

The participants in the meeting discussed the draft law on prevention and combating of discrimination, which has been highly debated lately in the Moldovan society, including within the Moldovan Orthodox Church.

On behalf of the Holy Synod of the Moldovan Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova Vladimir expressed concern over the negative consequences of the adoption of this draft law, which contains notions referring to the sexual minorities.

Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu said that the draft law has not been forwarded to the parliament so far, and that the government is to adopt its final version in the nearest future.

Lupu said that one the one hand, the adoption of the draft law on the prevention and combating of the discrimination is needed to ensure the observance of the citizens’ fundamental rights. On the other hand, this document should not run counter to the Moldovan society’s customs and traditions and to the Christian morality. Lupu gave assurances that the final document which is to be adopted by the parliament will not breach the fundamental principles of the Orthodox Church.

At the same time, the parliament speaker expressed his regret over the fact that the debates around this law are not focused on the document’s content, but on some rumours and suppositions.

The members of the Holy Synod of the Moldovan Orthodox Church expressed their support for the approach to this issue displayed by the parliament speaker, voicing gratitude for the understanding and amiability of this meeting.

At the meeting, the representatives of the Moldovan Orthodox Church agreed to take part in the debates on the above draft law, within the relevant parliamentary commission. Moreover, this subject is to be discussed at a roundtable with the participation civil society representatives.
