METROPOLITAN SERAPHIM OF PIRAEUS SUPPORTS HIERARCH PROSECUTED UNDER ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW

Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus supports Metropolitan Alexander of Mantineia and Kynouria who will soon appear in court for his criticism of the law which legalizes same-sex “marriages.”
According to Metropolitan Seraphim, the activities of the Metropolitan of Mantineia and Kynouria “have inspired God’s people” for many decades. “He has taken care for his diocese wisely, with prudence and sacrificial love.”
The metropolitan of Piraeus stressed that the criminal investigation initiated by the Tripoli investigative committee against Metropolitan Alexander for his “statements concerning the terrible vice of homosexuality which is a psychopathological deviation from the natural physiological state of an individual” is “utterly groundless and unfounded.”
In Metropolitan Seraphim’s view, the accusations against Metropolitan Alexander of violation of the anti-discrimination law are absolutely without foundation because the hierarch only expressed the Church position on sodomy: “He did not call for violence against the poor victims of the vice. Instead, he said he was sorry about the tragic perversion of their lives… and stressed that he was praying for their repentance and salvation… His right of expression is in line with the Constitution; it is part and parcel of the existing legislation.”
In the judgment of Metropolitan Seraphim, by speaking up against the passion of sodomy Metropolitan Alexander “did his duty as a hierarch.”
In April 2016 the Metropolitan of Mantineia spoke out sharply against the passage of the law of free cohabitation by the Greek Parliament: “The worst thing is that the Parliament is voting for the laws which call perversion and union of perverted individuals of the same sex ‘marriages.’”
Speaking of sodomites, the metropolitan said: “These are people of an anomaly which is condemned by both society and life itself. I feel pity for them. I pray for them to be forgiven by the Lord, to repent, mend their ways, and become honest members of our society. The Church is guided by the Law of God and the natural order, and if anyone has some defect he should not shamelessly show it off.” In the metropolitan’s opinion, individuals with nontraditional sexual orientations are “sick” and in need of healing. When asked by a journalist whether there are representatives of sexual minorities among the Church members, the metropolitan replied: “I don’t know. But if there are such people, we must distance them from others.”
