Moscow: Metropolitan Korniliy – Primate of the Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church met with Patriarch Krill of Moscow & All Russia during the National Unity day gathering at the Red Square in Moscow on 4th November 2014. Both Primates greeted each other and exchanged shake hands. The Patriarch of Russian Orthodox Church also met President Vladimir Putin as well as with heads of several traditional religious groups in the country. Flowers were laid at the famous Monuments to Minin and Pozharsky in Red Square.
Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church also known as Russian Orthodox Old ritualistic Church or as Russian Orthodox Old-Ritualist Church broke away from the Russian Orthodox Church due to the schism which took place in opposition to the liturgical reforms made by Patriarch Nikon in the 17th century. The Russian Old Rite along with the Lipovan Orthodox Old-Rite Church belongs to the Belokrinitskaya Hierarchy.
Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church underwent persecution during the Soviet times. In the modern era, attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian government towards the Old Orthodox Believers has changed. Several Church properties have been returned to the community with freedom of worship.
There are large numbers of Orthodox Old Believers living in different parts of the world. They belong to different hierarchies. There is also Old Rite Parishes under the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia – Moscow Patriarchate. Bishop John of Caracas and South America is charge of for the Old Rite Parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
