14.06.2011
On June 13, 2011, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations, paid a visit to the residence of Patriarch of Alexandria in Cairo. He was welcomed by Patriarchal vicars, Bishop Niphon of Babylon and Bishop Nicodemus of Nitria.
Metropolitan Hilarion saw the church of St. Nicholas and the cell in which St. Nectarios of Pentapolis used to live, as well as the domestic chapel dedicated to this miracle-worker of Aegina.
Then the DECR chairman was received in audience by His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria. In a warm talk held in an atmosphere of confidence, they discussed some issues concerning the bilateral relations between the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Moscow as well as matters of pan-Orthodox significance.
The Primate of the Church of Alexandria presented Metropolitan Hilarion with a holy pectoral icon. The DECR chairman, in his turn, presented His Beatitude Theodore with a copy of the Russian Bible in yapp and a copy of the Greek version of his book The Mystery of Faith.
A dinner was given in honour of the guest from the Russian Orthodox Church. In the evening, Metropolitan Hilarion and his party left for Athens.
The DECR chairman’s trip was sponsored by the St. Gregory the Theologian Charity.
