Message of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, on Republic Day

Dearly Beloved Sons and Daughters,

We extend our pontifical blessings from Holy Etchmiadzin and congratulate you on the festive occasion of Republic Day.

Today we commemorate the hallowed memories of the re-establishment of Armenian statehood. Following an interruption of centuries, the first Republic of Armenia was born out of the heroic battles of our people in the month of May 1918.

The re-establishment of Armenian statehood was achieved through the intrepid and heroic struggle our nation’s sons and daughters. Soldier, villager, priest – ignoring the threat of death – went to the battlefield at the moment of decision, under the continuous tolling of our church bells and their faithful souls inspired by Catholicos of All Armenians Gevork V Sureniants – the new Ghevond Yerets of Armenian survival.

A small portion of our homeland was saved, over which flew the flag of Armenian statehood. The proclamation of the first Republic of Armenia was a turning point in our history, which also became a testimony of our people’s aspirations – to build a democratic, legal and civil state; to build a free and just society. These contributions and the love for the homeland today shall direct our lives, become spirit and inspiration for our efforts and labors, so that we build a secure, prosperous and joyful future for our homeland and people.

We pray that God keep and protect Armenia and Artsakh in peace, steadfast in faith and maintain all of our people faithful to their visions. May the Lord and Grantor of all goodness, grace and bless Armenian life dispersed throughout the world with bountiful prosperity.
