Man held for sledgehammer attack at Calif Church
2010-08-12 – United Sates of America
Police say a Glendale man has been arrested after he smashed a monument outside an Armenian church, causing $80,000 in damage.
Victor Petrescu remained jailed Thursday on $50,000 bail after allegedly telling police he was heeding a Biblical injunction to destroy sacred pillars.
Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz says Petrescu was arrested Tuesday in the Los Angeles suburb after he allegedly used a sledgehammer to chip a stone monument outside St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church.
The sculpture is carved with crosses and commemorates the adoption of Christianity by Armenians 17 centuries ago.
