“Mama, I’m Hungry & Cold” — The Saddest Words a Mother Can Hear
Jun28 NGO – 20/12/2019
Aleksandar Vucicevic, an 11-year-old boy from Kursumlija, left the hospital last week and returned home – to unimaginable poverty.
Aleksandar had no one to visit him in the hospital as his mother could not afford the trip. When he saw everyone else had visitors he wanted to cry but then remembered his mother and sister love him and he hurried to recover so he could go home.
His home, basically a single room, has no heat so his sister Milica (12) and him squat to avoid sitting on the cold floor. Along with their mother Milijana, their small family gets by on $100 a month, which they receive from their deceased father’s pension. The children are both epileptic, very shy and their seriousness seems too mature for their age. They’re aware of their situation so they don’t ask their mother for much. No birthdays, no slava, no Christmas — just food on the table is a daily challenge.
The holidays are fast approaching, and many of us look forward to spending time with our loved ones in the warmth and comfort of our homes. Let’s not forget those who have nothing to eat or a warm place to sleep. Can you chip in today?
