Contest for dominance over Orthodox world. Yugo-nostalgia hampered independence bid.
DNEVNIK
The ongoing silent war for dominance over the Orthodox ecumenical world may have a great influence over the problem of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, which is still not recognized as independent by its sister churches, the daily says. The daily writes that the Istanbul Patriarchy, led mainly by clergy of Greek descent, is trying to counter the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church and assert its own dominance. The Greek clergy is seen as being close to the Serbian Orthodox Church, which is the main opponent of the independent status of the Macedonia Church.
UTRINSKI VESNIK
The last Macedonian government of the Yugoslav communist era, under the leadership of Gligorie Gogovski, was “way more Macedonian” than current government policy, says Former Macedonian Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski in an interview for the daily. Georgievski, one of the most prominent rightist politicians during the period of the 1990s when Macedonia gained its independence, talks about the sense of Yugo-nostalgia that he says was and still is widespread among Macedonians.
