Lviv City Mayor Met with Heads of Religious Confessions

On March 3 in Lviv, the city mayor Andriy Sadovyy met with the heads of religious confessions of the region.

On behalf of the UOC attending the meeting were the ruling bishop of the Diocese of Lviv Archbishop Augustine of Lviv and Halych nd Vicar Bishop of the Diocese of Lviv, Bishop Philaret of Drohobych.

Among the important issues – cooperation with the authorities in the social sphere. The confessions representatives advanced the initiative of establishment of the Council of Churches in Lviv, which was supported by the city mayor.

During the meeting the critical situation with payment for the natural gas consumed and release of rental payment was discussed. The heads of confessions intend to initiate together with the city authorities the address to the President of Ukraine and government to help solving the problem.

Also during the meeting the proposition to take the icon of the Theotokos of Lviv into the streets of the city during the celebration of the day of the city on May 6-7 was discussed.

The Icon of the Theotokos of Lviv is one of the most interesting and mysterious records of the Ukrainian Church culture. It is symbolical that granting her mercy and maternal care to the city, the Most Holy Theotokos Odigitria has blessed throughout the history all the traditional communities of Lviv with her grace-filled presence. Now the icon remains in the chapel of the Lviv Gallery of Arts.
