Kosovo police take over Serb Monastery
24/8/2010
The medieval Serb monastery in Gracanica has been placed under the protection of Kosovo police, the Kosovo Police Service (KPS) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The decision angered the official Belgrade and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The monastery’s security handover from the NATO-lead KFOR international peacekeeping force to Kosovo police has been carried out without the consent of the Serbian Orthodox Church which has repeatedly opposed any such moves, the Belgrade-based Beta news agency quotes Bishop Teodosije of Lipljan as saying.
Serbia’s State Secretary for Kosovo and Metohija Oliver Ivanovic echoed that the KPS could not be trusted because those who had staged riots and set fire to Serb monasteries in previous years were still at large.
