NEW DELHI : (PTI) Veteran Congress leader Karan Singh on (April 23) was conferred with the prestigious Paulose Mar Gregorious Award for his contribution in promoting inter-faith dialogue and social reform.

The award was presented by President Pratibha Patil at a function at the prestigious Vighyan Bhavan.
The President described Singh as a “rare person with a number of rare qualities.”

Singh, member of the erstwhile royal family of Jammu and Kashmir, was selected for his work towards promotion of inter-faith dialogue, social reform, culture and national integration.

The award was instituted by the Sophia Society in the memory of its founder, the late Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios, who was the first Bishop of the Delhi Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church.

The award recognises the seminal contribution made by individuals in the promotion of inter-faith dialogue, as well as work in the fields of community self-renewal, education, public health, social justice, culture and peace.

On receiving the prestigious award an elated Dr. Singh said, “I am very honoured to receive this Award. I had a long association with Bishop Paulos Mar Gregorios and I found him to be an extremely learned and unusual man. We travelled to many parts of the world together.”

Echoing the sentiments of the Sophia Society, its President His Grace Job Mar Philoxenos, Metropolitan, Diocese of Delhi said “The Paulos Mar Greogorios Award was instituted by the Sophia Society to remember the contributions of its illustrious founder after whom the Award is instituted. The Paulos Mar Gregorios Award, while awarding an accomplished individual, invigorates one to nourish Christian values. We are extremely proud to be presenting the award to Dr. Singh for his contribution in various fields.”

About the Award:

The Sophia Society, founded in 1984, instituted the Paulose Mar Gregorios Award after the first Bishop of the Delhi Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church late Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios, who in his own capacity was an internationally renowned author, philosopher, teacher and social thinker.

Since the demise of Dr Gregorios in 1996, the Award in his memory was presented to persons associated with him to promote ideals of peace, justice and wisdom. The first recipient of the Award in 1998 was His Holiness The Dalai Lama in the field of fostering international peace. A year later, the Award was given to Dr Verghese Kurian for setting up the brand Amul through his constant endeavour in community self-renewal. In the year 2002, the Award recognized the contribution of Dr PK Warrier of Kottackal Arya Vaidyasala for his outstanding contribution to holistic medicine. In 2005, the Fourth Paulose Mar Gregorios Award was presented to renowned social reformer Late Shri Baba Amte for dedicating his life to securing social justice for the poor, especially in the area of service to leprosy patients.
